I have installed the new Ubuntu 9.04 linux distribution, this weekend on my laptop. The very first thing, which has me impressed is, its variety of installation options.
You can install it from Windows itself, just insert the Ubuntu CD/DVD, It will prompt you to install it as a separate OS like windows or you can use windows directory, to install it. You don’t’ need to bother about your partitions, they will stay as it is. No separate Ext partitions required that means you don’t need a dedicated partition for linux.
You can also install it in traditional way by making a separate Ext partition as well.
This is not all you can also use it as live CD. Just insert the disc in your Disc Drive and reboot your machine. It will load Ubuntu OS in your RAM and its ready for you, Do whatever you like, Browse Internet, Create office documents[OpenOffice 3.0], Play games, Edit images and many more. It automatically mounts your windows drives so you can save your documents on your hard disk, while playing with Ubuntu on the fly.
As per the Look and Feel, I am using normal mode, but there are lots of options for visual effects, those you can try out.
It is equipped with plenty of applications, like Open Office 3.0, Firefox 3.0, softwares for editing images, more than 10 games, and on and on………
Add and Remove Programs is also there. For people those are scared of installation and uninstallation and feel it is a nightmare in linux. Please try this, it is Similar or better than windows add/remove program. Select application and Click to update. Rest ubuntu will do, download files, install on your machine and make ready for you.
Trust me guys try this distribution, you will find it better than any other linux distribution.

Ubuntu provides a facility to leave a message, if someone’s screen is locked. When user logged in again he will get the message left by people.
Ubuntu has feature of taking a screen shot but the difference is, it provides 3 modes.
1. Screen shot of desktop
2. Screen shot of current window
3. Screen shot of selected area.
There is an option of delay. You can select delay time in seconds [Max 99 seconds], it will take the screen shot after the time you have selected. This is very useful while getting picture of moving images like movie or other.
Isn’t it amazing.
1. My Compaq came with an Atheros Wireless adapter. I had to install special driver for it to work on Jaunty [madwifi drivers]
2. Ubuntu Forums did give me support for that
