Employee Engagement activities during tumultuous times!
As the market scenario continues to bleak during this unsteady phase, economy seems to be getting weaker everyday. Uncertainty is pervasive and employees may not feel secure at their job.
Tough times disrupt productivity and team performance. Employees feel stressed, over-pressurized and question their safety and security during these days of mounting economic slowdown.
Though many businesses as a regular policy practice lay-off on their non performers but during such times even this regular practice impacts negatively on good performers as they feel insecure towards their job and this subsequently, results in them working under tremendous pressure. The biggest challenge faced by Organizations is then to retain their top performers and to take control of all –during this hard time.
So what can a business do despite the economy’s downward slide and tight budget circumstances to motivate employees and keep them focused and on board?
Businesses need to take some steps to increase employee motivation and retain their best employees:
They can evaluate on how to improve the work environment for their employees. Rearranging working practices and job roles is one inexpensive approach. Adding inspirational and motivational phrases to the office may also help.
There is a lot of anxiety and uncertainty in many organizations these days, employees always wants to know that what is happening in their company. Set aside the time regularly to provide with the information that will help them understand the current situation of the company.
Some employee engagement activities can substantially contribute to satisfaction and stress management for the staff. These activities can help in minimizing the stress and maximizing the productivity and performance. An organization can conduct some Employee Engagement/Team Bonding & Fun Learning Activities for employees to lower down their stress level and increase motivation.
Offering your employees different types of rewards or recognition for their outstanding work/ performance may have higher personal value for them. It can be a good practice to reward the employee on theirs accomplishments or when they achieve an important milestone in their career. A sincere thank you can go a long way.
Organizations can plan some recreational activities to boost up the moral of their employees. The same can be achieved by organizations by devoting few hours from one working day in a month for conducting recreational activities. With the help of these activities organization can engage different teams and built strong relationship between employees. After deciding what aspects of your practice need to be improved, create recreational activities that will provide your employees with the motivations they need to succeed. A system of clearly stated rules and results will give benefit to your employees and your organization.
In this way employee engagement activities can boost employee’s moral in this difficult phase of economy because employee moral is directly linked to productivity. It is very necessary for an organization to be creative, active and make the office a pleasant and enjoyable place to work.

We’ve found one of the most effective - and positive - ways to increase employee engagement in a recession is through strategic recognition. Recognize employees for behaviors and actions that deliver against your objectives or demonstrate your company values and be sure to tell them how their effort matters. Now you have employees who know and understand what they do and the value it has to your organization AND they are willing to give additional effort to help the company succeed.
It’s interesting. People keep talking about how the recession requires businesses to focus more on employee engagement. At the same time, it’s easy to find stories claiming that EE efforts are being sliced and diced due to cost-containment initiatives in response to the recession.
Hi Manu the article is good but I think u needed to be a little more comprehensive.
